This is a nice french fireman's axe dates from the mid to late 19th century. It wears a small but hefty axe head that measures 6 3/4 inches across with a cutting edge of 3 9/16 inches. The axe head shows to have been cleaned in recent years, nevertheless does remain in good condition with only a little minor staining. The wooden shaft is brass fitted and measures 17 7/8 inches in length and remains healthy with much of the original black finish still present. Overall measuring 18 13/16 inches in length.
